Policy and Procedures for COVID-19 at school

If a child develops COVID-19 symptoms at school:

Any student with symptoms concerning for COVID is personally evaluated by the school nurse. The child is separated from other students while being assessed and a recommendation is made based on TN Department of Health Guidelines. Please click here to see the algorithm used by the TN Department of Health to guide these decisions. If a student is screened by the School Nurse and determined to have symptoms concerning for COVID-19, the guidance is that to return to school they must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Isolate for 10 days and be symptom free for 24 hours prior to return OR
  • Obtain a negative COVID test result OR
  • Receive a differential diagnosis from a provider (note from your pediatrician).

What is the communication for COVID-19 cases and close contacts at school?

If your child is identified as a close contact and needs to be placed into quarantine, you will receive either a phone call or an email from the school nurse within hours of that decision. If the case is identified during the school day, Principal Collins will send an email alerting you of that case. You will hear from a school nurse within hours for further instructions on quarantine. In the next 24 hours, you will receive an email from Principal Collins. The email from Principal Collins specifies the end date of quarantine. When your child is ready to return to school, please return with the form attached in Principal Collins email (which is a parent signature form). You DO NOT need to call the Health Department and get an additional clearance form for return to school unless your child had a positive COVID-19 test. If the date on the email is different than what was communicated to you, please reach out to the school nurse but assume the date on the email is the correct date of return. Our school nurse, with guidance from the Metro Public Health Department, makes the initial determination of need for quarantine. Each case is further reviewed, and you may be contacted by the Health department with additional instructions. This could take 5-7 days or longer. Your child must remain in quarantine throughout the designated 10 day quarantine period unless contacted by the Health Department with further instructions.  For further information or questions, MNPS COVID-19 reference guides are available and consistently updated.
